Selling Your Service Intimidated by knocking on a door?

Can’t find the right words? Afraid you can’t get past the gatekeeper? These are probably some of the most frequent requests for help I get. While many competent, professional cleaners are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and dig into a nasty restroom or cafeteria they are absolutely terrified of walking into an office lobby and introducing themselves. Here are some quick tips to make this an easier process. 1. Be calm; don’t be afraid to hear the words “Go Away”. Expect to hear them, it makes it easier. 2. Try to find a gimmick or giveaway to break the introduction ice. Head over to Cosco or Sam’s and get some large packs of chewing gum, hard candy that is individually wrapped, little packs of cookies etc… When you walk into a lobby, go right up to the receptionist and hand her the goodie before you open your mouth. This throws them off track. While they are looking at the goodie you can launch into your opening. 3. Keep your opening salvo brief and to the point. This person is probably responsible for answering the phones too and trust me, they have heard all kinds of pitches from salespeople. Restrict yourself to who you are, what you offer and who should you talk to. 4. If you can’t reach or get to the decision maker, do not leave that lobby without the decision makers names, phone and correct mailing address. 5. Now you can target your future marketing to the proper person and avoid the gatekeeper.
